Do You Collect Things, or Experiences?

August 27, 2014 |

I’ve been thinking recently about my values and priorities, and the ones that I see as an essential part of Nomadtopia. I created the graphic above, using a photo I took in Thailand on my visa run to Myanmar, to illustrate one of them: I collect experiences, not things.

There are lots of reasons one might collect experiences instead of things. Here are mine:

  • Experiences almost always leave me more satisfied than things.
  • Experiences are easier to take with me (as memories, photos) than things.
  • I rarely enjoy shopping, which is one of the main ways to acquire things.
  • Things take up space.
  • Experiences usually give me energy, whereas things suck up energy.
  • I want my spending to reflect my values. (Even better, some of the best experiences are free!)
