Simply deciding where to travel as a nomad can be Simply deciding where to travel as a nomad can be tricky. Every country has different entry and visa laws, and it’s easier to travel with some passports than others. Unfortunately, people who have to apply for a visa to go almost anywhere face an unnecessary and unfair barrier to seeing the world.
In today’s episode, my guest is Vangile Makwakwa, a South African, a nomad, and a money coach. We talk about discriminatory visa processes, her personal nomad style, her favorite countries she’s visited, and how to navigate money trauma when moving abroad.

After being a hard-core minimalist for years, it's After being a hard-core minimalist for years, it's rather shocking to find oneself "suddenly" surrounded by stuff! I obviously need to get better at keeping things organized and put away, but having less stuff would also help and would bring back that sense of space and ease we had when we first landed in an unfurnished apartment in Mexico City.
One decluttering tip I've heard is to act like you're preparing for a long-distance or international move even if you're not going anywhere. We don't have any concrete plans but I'm sure there are more moves in our future, so it's never too early to start reducing and reclaiming those minimalist ways!
Have you found yourself in a similar spot? What helps you declutter or stop accumulating stuff?

¡Hola! I'm Amy, and I thought I'd take a moment t ¡Hola! I'm Amy, and I thought I'd take a moment to (re)introduce myself.
These days, I'm mom to twin toddlers and relatively settled in central Mexico. This is just the latest iteration of my Nomadtopia®; I've been location independent since 2004 and living and traveling abroad since 2007. I started out at 29, quitting my job to take a nine-month solo round-the-world trip, and I never looked back.
After that trip, I bounced around the U.S. while I built my business as a copyeditor. I moved to Buenos Aires in 2007, and just when I was getting antsy and thinking about moving on I met my husband, Roberto. After we got married in 2012, he quit his job and we became digital nomads (but kept our apartment in BA, which we still have today).
After traveling much of Southeast Asia, India, the U.S. and Canada, and Central America, we came to Mexico for the food (really) in late 2014 and started spending more and more time here. We've now been in Mexico full time since 2017, first in San Miguel de Allende, then Mexico City (where the twins were born), and now Querétaro.
From solo backpacker to wandering freelancer to digital nomad couple to expat family... it's been quite a journey! There's no question that the things I pay attention to and worry about have changed a lot over the years—as a solo backpacker it was whether to stay in a hostel or splurge on a hotel and now it's international estate planning and schooling—but questions like where I want to be and for how long never seem to go away. 🤨
I know what it's like to figure it out as you go, deal with the challenges of a global life, and try to balance seemingly competing goals and priorities when it comes to family, work, and lifestyle. If you're in a similar spot, follow @nomadamy and let's travel this path together! I share lots of resources, stories, and hard-earned wisdom here, on my podcast Nomadtopia Radio, and in my community, the Nomadtopia Collective.

When you're a nomad, starting a family isn't quite When you're a nomad, starting a family isn't quite as straightforward! Not knowing how long it may take to conceive and when the countdown will begin can affect your travel plans right off the bat and possibly for a long time (it took us five years!). Eventually, you need to decide when to stop traveling and where you want to actually give birth—not to mention how long to stay put before you hit the road again.
Some people go "home" to give birth near family or in familiar surroundings/language, some people choose the country they've been spending a lot of time or where they want their kids to have citizenship (and maybe get residency as parents)... a lot of factors go into this decision and all the others that come with starting a family as a nomad.
In this episode of Nomadtopia Radio, my guest @amandakingsmith and I talk about all this and much more. If you're thinking about starting a family on the road, you'll definitely want to check it out! Listen to Nomadtopia Radio in your favorite podcast app. Also be sure to check out Episode 179 from May 2021 when Julia Jerg (@thenomadmompreneur) and I talked about our experiences giving birth and starting a family.

I had a slight panic when I found out last night t I had a slight panic when I found out last night that I was called for jury duty—tomorrow! For Delaware, you can typically fill out an online form explaining why you can't appear, but with the short notice I had to call. I was lucky that the person at Juror Services took my word for it when I said I lived abroad; I think normally they ask for documentation of that.
It's always a relief when some random thing that seems like it's going to be complicated because I live abroad actually goes smoothly! Have you been called for jury duty while abroad? What happened?
P.S. I said in the video rather sarcastically that "all Americans look forward to" being called for jury duty, but despite the complications it can create in one's life I do think it could be interesting! I've only ever served for one day, in San Francisco; they were going through the jury selection process and I was dismissed that same day.

Finding a forever home certainly isn’t a priorit Finding a forever home certainly isn’t a priority for all nomads. While some are on an intentional search, others actively spurn the idea of home—or they end up finding it when they least expect it and a location they visit just suddenly clicks. As I always say, there’s no one way to approach the nomad journey.
‍
In this episode, I’m chatting with Vanessa Jacquemin, an online business strategist who left her original home in the United States more than 20 years ago and recently found her forever home in Mexico. She shares her process for finding the right home for her, how becoming a mother shifted her point of view, and her advice for others wanting to embark on a nomadic journey.
