Advice from Nomads

September 16, 2021 | ,

Many years ago I published a series of written interviews here on the Nomadtopia blog. One of the questions I asked people was, “What advice do you have for others who want to create their own Nomadtopia?”

Today I wanted to share some of the answers with you, along with my own take on each. Maybe one of these messages is exactly what you need to hear right now.

“Save save save. Having a cushion of money takes the pressure off those first few months. When a project doesn’t come in as you expected or your flights are hundreds of dollars more, it doesn’t cause undue stress and you just put it down to a learning experience.”

I couldn’t agree more! Having money in the bank gives you crucial breathing room so you’re not stressing about unexpected costs and/or loss of income.

“I would rather regret the things I did than the things I didn’t do, so definitely go for it. With that said, make sure you give yourself an easy way out. Before I left home, I gave myself permission to change my mind and come home anytime I wanted to. It gives me peace of mind to know that I don’t have to ‘stick it out’ if I don’t want to.”

This is such an important thing to think about and give yourself permission for. There is nothing wrong with changing course or even going home if it’s not working out for you, for any reason.

“As far as we know, we have one life. Live it how you want; don’t waste time, but don’t stress about it either. Don’t let others impose on how you ‘should’ live, and try not to impose ‘shoulds’ on yourself. If you want to jump off the cliff and fly… jump! Go for it! If you have a subconscious need for permission… here… you have it. Now, go!”

If you’ve listened to Nomadtopia Radio very much, you know I also talk about the “shoulds” and how there’s no right way to live your Nomadtopia. Do it however you want, just do it!

P.S. As I look back over this list, I see ways the Nomadtopia Collective can support you in all of these areas. We’d love to have you join us!

  • You can learn from other members what to spend money on and how much things cost in different parts of the world, which will help you save.
  • We’ll support you anytime you need to change things up, and share our own experience if you fear what others in your life might say or think.
  • And because everyone in the Collective is living their version of Nomadtopia, there’s plenty of inspiration to get you out of the “shoulds” and figure out what works for you.
