Local Sounds: Call to Prayer

October 7, 2013 | , , ,

Malaysia is the first predominantly Muslim country I’ve ever visited. It’s been a really cool and fascinating experience.

One of the most evocative things, and a constant reminder that I’m somewhere different, is the call to prayer. Here on Langkawi, in the early evening, especially, you can hear it echoing across the paddy fields, and I just love sitting and soaking it up.

Last week, I took a short video to record the sounds of the call to prayer and all the animals coming out for the night (this was taken about the same time we see the nightly frog commute, as they all come out of their hiding places and head into the garden, but I still haven’t captured a good video of that yet!).

The audio is pretty quiet in the video; to really capture the sound, use headphones and turn up the volume. Enjoy!
